Holy Trinity RC Church, Newark.
From the Bishop of Nottingham

My Dear People,

Yes it is true. The new church of Holy Trinity is finished at last. What a long and painful ordeal it has been, but now we rejoice that this new dwelling place for the Lord is complete. For so many years, the tower of the old church in Parliament Street has stood out like a landmark. The faithful people, with their priests, have joined in the celebration of Holy Mass, and for many other occasions of joy and sorrow. On this happy day, we remember with gratitude those good priests and people who built up the parish to what it is today.

With the knowledge that the existing church could not much longer cater for the ever-growing numbers, Monsignor O’Dowd, then parish priest, decided, with his people, that the time had come to build a new church. With great enthusiasm, plans were prepared and the scheme was put into motion. Fr. O’Sullivan, with his great driving force, continued the great work. Now the skyline of Newark has a new look, as the slim tower reaches up to the heavens. It symbolises the faithful reaching up for God’s grace and blessing with confidence.

To you all, without exception, I offer my warmest thanks and congratulations. You have a church of which you can be justifiably proud. Use it often and well. May it be, as was the old church, a place of peace, joy and comfort. Your great generosity has been outstanding; but, as you know, what you give to God will bring blessings in return.

I thank the architect, Mr Horsley, and the builders and craftsmen for work well done. May this monument of faith serve Newark and its people for many generations to come.

+ James
